But fear not! There is a way out of this financial mess, which could start with making sacrifices. Yes, you read that right - sacrifices. I know it's not something we all love to do, but making sacrifices can be the key to achieving financial freedom.
Let's break it down. As someone with ADHD, you may find yourself impulsive and easily distracted. This can lead to overspending and the inability to stick to a budget. And you also likely have inflated your lifestyle to such a point where a lot of your spending is a deeply ingrained pattern. That's where making sacrifices comes in. It requires discipline and self-control, which are essential skills to develop for anyone with ADHD.
Making sacrifices means cutting back on non-essential expenses and prioritizing your financial goals. It could be as simple as giving up that daily coffee run or cutting back on dining out. Instead, you could use that money to pay off debt or build up an emergency fund.
Making sacrifices also means saying no to things that don't align with your financial goals. For example, if your friends invite you on an expensive vacation, but you know it's not in your budget, it's okay to say no. It's not easy, but it's necessary to achieve financial freedom.
Now, I'm not saying you have to give up everything that brings you joy. It's important to balance enjoying life and saving for the future. The key is to prioritize your financial goals and make intentional decisions about where you spend your money.
Making sacrifices may not be easy, but it's ultimately worth it. You'll feel less stressed and anxious when you have control over your finances. You'll be free to pursue your passions and dreams without being weighed down by debt and financial obligations.
My challenge to you is to make one large sacrifice that can completely change the direction of your finances. I work with so many people who are one sacrifice away from being able to make incredible progress. For example, it could be giving up your weekly house cleaning. Maybe you move to a once-a-month schedule. Maybe it is giving up DoorDash or Uber Eats. It could be giving up your yearly vacation for a few years or drastically reducing its budget.
For 2023, I made a big sacrifice myself. I reduced my country club membership to a social and swim membership. That means I can't play any golf! And this was a really hard decision to make. But the truth is, after I made it, I felt so much better. I am saving $600 dollars per month, and I intend to use that money to increase my contributions to investments and increase my contribution to my daughter's college fund.
In conclusion, making sacrifices is important for anyone with ADHD who wants financial freedom. It requires discipline, self-control, and prioritization. But with a little effort and sacrifice, you can take control of your finances and live the life you want. So, take a deep breath, plan, and make those sacrifices. Your future self will thank you.
